Michael is a Senior Lecturer in the History of Science at the University of Edinburgh, where he researches and teaches the history and culture of modern science and mathematics. His work examines the connections between abstract theories and the social, political, and other contexts they come from and transform. His subjects range in scale from the very small and personal (dots on pages and chalk on blackboards) to the very large and complex (international organisations and global research communities in modern mathematics). He is interested in how critical histories can inform and offer perspectives on contemporary and future mathematics research, education, and public understanding.
