Sadie’s research focuses on the role of language in identity construction. Her specialisms include migration, identity, accent and dialect variation, multilingualism, linguistic discrimination, the language of teenagers and young people, and language in education. Her PhD research, completed in 2018, focused on the linguistic and social experiences of Polish teenagers in a Glasgow high school. She aims to spend her academic career developing methods for the study of language which centre and support the speakers of marginalised varieties and languages, and to throw her weight behind the fight for linguistic justice in Scotland and elsewhere. She makes the award-winning linguistics podcast Accentricity, which is aimed at a public, non-specialist audience, and aims to narrow the gap between academic knowledge about language and people’s everyday linguistic experiences.
