Dr Katherine Duncan is a Chancellor’s Fellow in Marine Microbial Antibiotic Discovery at the University of Strathclyde, Strathclyde Institute of Pharmacy and Biomedical Sciences. Her group investigates the chemical ‘language’ of marine microorganisms. In particular, the influence and patterns of environment, ecology, biogeography and evolution on this metabolite exchange, with a focus on accelerating the biodiscovery of novel antibiotics from our underexplored oceans www.medicinesfromthesea.com.
Prior to starting her group in 2016, she has completed two Postdoctoral Fellowships at Scripps Institution of Oceanography (California) in Marine Biomedicine and at The Scottish Marine Institute in Marine Biotechnology, a PhD in Biomedical Science (Canada) and a MChem with International Placement (Florida).
An advocate for education-for-all and equality, diversity and inclusion in STEMM, Kate is faculty for the non-for-profit Homeward Bound – a global women in STEMM leadership program http://homewardboundprojects.com.au and has twice co-led the science program (including Antarctic expedition).
