Richard is a Royal Academy of Engineering Research Fellow, and Proleptic Lecturer, in the James Watt School of Engineering at the University of Glasgow. He enjoys sharing his work with the public; and believes that science should be used for societal benefit. He wants to widen participation in Engineering and Physics because diverse teams produce better work.
The team in which Richard works focusses on the development of miniature gravity sensors that can be used to peer beneath the Earth under our feet. These sensors can image – amongst other things – the inner workings of volcanoes before they erupt. A network of gravity sensors is currently being commissioned on Mt Etna, Sicily, to assist early warning systems related to the volcano. The research of the group was named by the Institute of Physics as one of the top ten breakthroughs in global physics of 2016.
